NMSU football notes/Gallup

I'm up here in Gallup covering a couple of days of New Mexico State football. The defense, at least the starting 11, continues to make progress in Joe Lee Dunn's 3-3-5 defense. They seem to be playing with more confidence, which is a good thing. But depth is still a question mark. They will need a handful of players at each spot to make a difference.

The Aggies have some good, young players on offense. Behind center, freshman fullback Rueban Martinez of Los Alamos has shown plenty of potential. He seems to have picked up the offense pretty quickly and the offensive coaches are high on him.

Redshirt freshman Ronald Opetaia showed some good things during Friday's two practices. He ran aggressively and with purpose. The Aggies appear to have found added depth in the offensive backfield.
