Peppers Pride

I know this blog item is coming a bit after the fact, but New Mexico bred Peppers Pride won her 17th consecutive race to establish the new allt-time record for consecutive wins by a thoroughbred.
The undefeated Peppers Pride had shared the previous record with Triple Crown winner Citation, two-time horse of the year Cigar and Louisiana-based sprinter Hallowed Dreams.
There has been some discussion about the legitimacy of Peppers Pride's streak because she has done it against New Mexico state-bred femailes.
But regardless of who she has beaten, the streak is a tremendous feat for her and her team, which includes trainer Joel Marr, a New Mexico State graduate. Peppers Pride has been trained well, has been consistent and has been a joy to watch.
Winning often and as consistent as she has isn't easy for humans or equine animals. Peppers Pride has brought national attention to the sport and to New Mexico because of what she has done.
How long will she continue to win? Who knows and who really cares. She's proven to be a tremendous horse at the top of her game in the prime of her career. She'll likely get a chance to make it 18 in a row next month at Zia Park in Hobbs and let's hope she runs at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino sometime later this year or early next.
There have been some great New Mexico bred horses over the years, most recently Rocky Gulch. But Peppers Pride will undoubtedly go down as one of the best the state has ever produced.
