Racing seminar

Professional horse player Art Canales hosts a free racing seminar at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday morning.

The informative session gets started at 10 a.m. in the Signature Showroom. Canales will concentrate his study on the 12-race live program from Sunland Park including the 9th running of the $100,000 Borderland Derby sponsored by Casa Ford.

Two $100 wagering vouchers will be given away. Free refreshments will be served.

The $100,000 Borderland Derby is Saturday’s featured 11th race. The 1 and 1/16 mile feature serves as a major prep race for the $800,000 Sunland Derby with a $1 million potential to be run on Sunday, March 29.

Doug O’Neill’s Santa Anita export Scorewithcater ranks as the 3-1 morning line favorite with jockey Alonso Quinonez. Mine That Bird is a $304,381 graded stakes winner from Canada. The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile finalist is listed as the 4-1 second choice.

New Mexico-bred sensation Lefty Who rates an 8-1 proposition. The Joel Marr trainee has won 5 of 6 races including the $125,000 Red Hedeman Mile last December.
Lefty Who is the richest horse in the 9-horse field with a $330,074 bankroll.

Post time Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday is 12:55 p.m.
