LAS CRUCES — Ronnie Daniels is only a sophomore in high school, but he’s been turning heads ever since he was a freshman.
The Albuquerque La Cueva football standout, who is also a very good basketball player, said Friday he has been offered a football scholarship by New Mexico State University.
New Mexico State coaches cannot comment on Daniels per NCAA rules.
“Through my high school coach (Fred Romero) I understand I’ve been offered a scholarship from New Mexico State,” Daniels said. “I plan on talking to the staff at NMSU. They have good players down there and want to do well. They hired a good staff and I like the wide open offense they will run.”
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Daniels said he will likely play running back in college and he was a second-team all-state selection last year in Class 5A in helping lead the Bears to the state playoffs. He was also a starting guard on La Cueva’s Class 5A state championship basketball team.
“I’m still learning the game and trying to improve on making good reads and hitting the hole hard every time,” Daniels said.
Daniels said he has received interest fro New Mexico, Oregon, Texas Tech and Arizona State.
“Right now, I’m not positive where I want to go, it’s a progress and I’m going to take my time,” Daniels said.
Kyle Henderson, who covers high school sports in New Mexico, says Daniels has Division I player written all over him.
“He has great speed, good size and has flat out play making ability,” Henderson said. “His highlight tape from his freshmen year playing varsity for the Bears speaks volumes.”
