Freddy Young and commitment to UNM

Mayfield High's Freddy Young committed to New Mexico to play football beginning in the Fall of 2008.

Young will play defensive back for the Lobos and it will be interesting to see how Young does at the next level. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder, whose father Fredd Young played linebacker for NMSU, started just one year of varsity for the Trojans. But he had a solid year as a cornerback and wide receiver for the 12-1 Trojans.

Young will need to get stronger at the next level, but he has good instincts and if he can find a way to fit into Rocky Long's defense at UNM, he could have a solid career.

Young, who also plays catcher for the Mayfield baseball team, improved quite a bit as the season went on and he became a fixture on both sides of the ball for the Trojans, which won their third straight 5A football title.

There is no doubt that Young has the bloodlines to do well in sports. He's improved gradually over the years in baseball as well, so Young's work ethic isn't a question.

Another former Trojans football player, wide receiver Chris Hernandez is up at UNM. Hernandez didn't get many looks out of high school but the work is that the UNM coaches are impressed with his athletic ability and ability to catch anything thrown at him.

Felix,
Can you do a update on the Taylor kid from Hobbs. Who is recruiting him and where is he leaning towards going?
