Class 5A at-large teams for football playoffs

It's a lock that Las Cruces High and Mayfield will be in next month's Class 5A football playoffs. The only question is where they will be seeded.

Now, the question remains should District 3-5A earn the two at-large bids to the state playoffs? The top two teams in each of the five districts will earn playoff bids. Oñate is coming off a nice win against Alamogordo last week and if it beats Gadsden, will have four wins and will have played a good scheduled.
Alamogordo will likely finish 6-4 overall, but will also likely finish just 1-3 in 3-5A.

The teams for sure in the playoffs in my mind are Mayfield, LCHS, Cibola, Clovis, Manzano, La Cueva, Eldorado and Hobs. Teams like Carlsbad, Valley, Oñate, Alamogordo, Rio Rancho and Gallup will all fight for the other playoff spots.

I think one team from 3-5A will get an at-large bid. The Knights have the upper hand right now, but the Tigers will get serious consideration because of their 5-1 non-district record. Oñate must win and win impressively against Gadsden and also play Las Cruces High tough. What hurt the Knights were losses to El Paso Eastwood and Hobbs, two games they could have won.

It would be a travesty if 3-5A didn't get three teams in because its probably the deepest and most competitive district in the state.

The Mayfield vs. Cruces game is still two weeks away. Is it too early for predictions? Cruces seems to have a little better offense and Mayfield a little better defense. Cruces seems to have a little more fire in their eyes as a whole. Will be one heck of a game.
