WAC Football Interesting Notes

It's down time for us in the summer, so we get to do some more blogging than usual in the summer. Here are some interesting WAC football notes as we get closer to the start of fall practice in August.

Boise State (10-3, 2007)
A Sept. 20 matchup with Oregon will be a big game for the Broncos. A win in this game could propel the Broncos into a BCS game for the second time in three years. Team is now 52-4 in WAC play. Boise State lost two straight to end the season in 2007 for the first time since 1993.

Fresno State (9-4, 2007)
Bulldogs start season at Rutgers and also visits UCLA, while entertaining Wisconsin. Had streak of six straight 1,000-yard rushers end last year. Is 14-0 against New Mexico State. Is 10-7 all-time in bowl games. Has not finished higher than second in WAC since 1999. Last outright title came in 1989 in Big West.

Nevada (6-7 in 2007)
Lost just 15 lettermen from last year and outgained opponents by 123 1/2 yards per game last year. Program has played in three straight bowl games. Entertains Texas Tech in second game of year, at Missouri in week 3.

Hawaii (12-1 in 2007)
Hawaii returns just eight starters from last year's Sugar Bowl team, fewest in league. Have to play at Boise State and Fresno State this year. Last year won WAC. Also shared titles in 1992 and 1999. Starts season at Florida on Aug. 30.

New Mexico State (4-9 in 2007)
WR LaVorick Williams is half-brother to NFL receiver Roy Williams. Gary Goff and Matt Mumme are co-offensive coordinators. Aggies looking for first bowl showing since 1960.

San Jose State (5-7 in 2007)
Three BCS transfers dot the roster and could make huge impact. Non-league games include visits to Nebraska and Stanford.Head coach Dick Tomey has won 175 career games and is 5-3 in bowl games.

Louisiana Tech (5-7 in 2007)
Looking for first bowl appearance since 2001 season. Head coach Derek Dooley is son of former Georgia head coach Vince Dooley. Dooley was an assistant under Nick Saban at LSU. Running back Patrick Jackson could be one of league's best after rushing for 950 yards last year.

Idaho (1-11 in 2007)
The Vandals have had eight straight losing seasons. Robb Akey enters second year as head coach. Starts season at Arizona on Aug. 30. Just 10-22 at home in last seven years. Akey was third coach in three years at Idaho.

Utah State (2-10 in 2007)
Bruce Snyder was last coach to leave Utah State with a winning record and that was in 1982. Last bowl appearance was in 1997. Non-league schedule includes games with Oregon, UNLV and BYU.

Can't wait for Marquez/Casamayor

The big fights between the smaller weight fighters continues in September when Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez moves up to lightweight to challenge Cuba's Joel Casamayor.
Marquez (48-4-1) will be fighting at lightweight for the first time and is coming off of a narrow split decision loss to Manny Pacquiao in March. Casamayor (36-3-1) is unbeaten in his last six fights and was last seen knocking off Michael Katsidis in a very good fight.

It should be a classic fight between two of the sport's best. Both have fought and beaten some of the best in the sport. Marquez is making his second move up in class and will provide a stern test for Casamayor.

Both are slick fighters and both seem to still have plenty left in the tank. This is a pick-em fight as far as I'm concerned. The fight could come down to who is consistently busier and whether Marquez can handle the heavier weight.

Pacquiao handled the move to lightweight against David Diaz with relative ease. If Marquez can handle the move up to 135, I believe he's the better fighter, but not by much. Anyway, should be a great fight.

Also in September, Katsidis will take on Juan Diaz in what should be another great lightweight fight. Diaz is coming off a March loss to Nate Campbell in Mexico.

The winner of the Diaz/Katsidis bout is back in line for a title shot, while the loser will have to head back to the drawing board.

The Juan Diaz/Katsidis fight should be an all-action fight that could end in any number of ways.

Diaz must regain the form he had before the loss to Campbell. Katsidis is all-action and we'll see if he's learned from his loss to Casamayor.

Pacquiao's destruction of Diaz

Manny Pacquiao was very impressive on Saturday night in his lightweight debut. He was still very fast, threw combinations from different angles and showed power. It looked as if David Diaz would survive the 12 rounds, but a Paquiao straight left ended the fight in the ninth.

Diaz had some success early with some body shots and straight lefts, but Pacquiao was simply too quick and with welterweight Floyd Mayweather now retired, Pacquiao must now be considered the top pound-for-pound boxer in boxing.

What's next for Pacquiao? Perhaps a showdown with unbeaten Edwin Valero or a move up to 140 to take on Ricky Hatton.Look for Pacquiao to take on Juan Manuel Marquez for the third time next year.

Here's my top five pound for pound fighters:
1. Manny Pacquiao
2. Joe Calzaghe
3. Juan Manuel Marquez
4. Kelly Pavlik
5. Israel Vasquez

Huge fight ahead in September

J.M. Marquez moving up to fight Casamayor
LAS VEGAS — Joel Casamayor will fight Juan Manuel Marquez on Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Golden Boy Promotions confirmed Friday.
Marquez (48-4-1, 35 KOs), the former two-division champion considered one of the world’s best pound-for-pound boxers, will fight as a lightweight for the first time. He lost a narrow split decision to Manny Pacquiao in March, surrendering his WBC 130-pound belt after one of the year’s best bouts.
Casamayor (36-3-1, 22 KOs), the former Cuban Olympic champion who will turn 37 next month, is unbeaten in his last six fights since losing his WBC lightweight title to Jose Luis Castillo in December 2004. Casamayor beat Michael Katsidis in March, knocking out the previously unbeaten Australian in the 10th round to end an action-filled fight.
The 34-year-old Marquez, a featherweight champion for two years, will move up in weight for the second time in his last four fights partly to keep pace with Pacquiao. The Filipino champion, who says he would welcome the chance to meet Marquez for a third time next year, will make his own 135-pound debut against WBC champ David Diaz on Saturday night.
Neither fighter has ever been knocked out. HBO Pay-Per-View will televise the bout.

Oscar De La Hoya book

Title: American Son, My Story, Oscar De La Hoya
Cost: $25.95
Pages: 268

Oscar De La Hoya recently came out with his new autobiography, entitled "American Son, My Story"

He co-wrote it with Steve Springer. The book gives a more in-depth look into his childhood and his thoughts about his career and where he stands being a Mexican-American athlete.

He also gives some insight into his opponents, i.e. Julio Cesar Chavez and his work with his trainers over the years, i.e. Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Robert Alcazar.

The book is a nuts and bolts type of bio. Nothing too extravagant, but revealing in many ways.

Oscar De La Hoya is one of our generation's most popular and intriguing athletes, so his words and actions are important to many. That's why his book is likely to be well-read, people want to hear about what he thought about his career and how it got started.

De La Hoya's career has been a fascinating one in many respects. He grew up poor in Los Angeles, rose to the top as an amateur and professional and is now a promoter at the highest level.

American Son is a good read, it's useful in many ways and you get an insight of De La Hoya, that you might not get otherwise from his newsclips.

Manny Pacquiao/David Diaz

Manny Pacquiao, who has won four world titles and who started his career at 106 pounds takes on David Diaz for the WBC lightweight title on Saturday ni ght in Las Vegas, Nev.

Pacquiao has defeated some of the best in the business, including Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera. He has the superior speed and boxing skill against Diaz. But he will be facing a bigger fighter in Diaz.

But Diaz isn't hard to find and Pacquiao should be able to land a fair amount of shots. However, I expect Diaz to have his moments and he should be able to take Pacquiao's best punches.

Diaz is a survivor. He earned a late knockout vs. the highly regarded Jose Armando Santa Cruz and he beat the legendary Erik Morales last August.

But I have to go with Pacquiao. He has too much speed and ability and look for him to win via decision.

Robinson gone, what next for Onate boys hoops

Richard Robinson has been a mainstay on the sideline of high school boys basketball at Onate High School. He coached for 13 years as the main voice and his best year was 2002 when the team finished second in Class 4A.

Robinson has been involved in high school basketball as a coach for 29 years. He also played at Hobbs High School and collegiately at New Mexico State, where is the school's sixth all-time leading scorer.

So it couldn't have been easy for him to step down as the head coach. He coached the team through three team camps in June and he seemed to be his usual self. Maybe it was just time for him to step down and do something different with his life, which he is doing at a charter school here in Cruces.

Robinson did some good things at OHS and he defintely had some intersting squads with the likes of Kelsey Crooks, Thomas Trotter, Willie Hamilton and Kevin Moore.

Robinson is leaving behind a decent bunch at Onate High School. Last season, the team qualifed for the Class 5A state tournament for the first time and returns several key players from that team. Robinson said Tuesday he firmly believes next year's team could be a top eight performer in New Mexico in 5A.

Now the attention moves to who will replace Robinson. Onate must act quickly. I'm sure there will be interest. One name that could pop up mighth be former Las Cruces High and Silver High boys coach Mike Carr. Plus, there might be some top assistant coaches from area high schools that might be interested in landing a head coaching job. It should be interesting.

Richard Robinson steps down at Onate

Onate High School boys basketball coach Richard Robinson has resigned his post at the school. He coached the Knights for 13 years and his best year was in 2002 when he coached the Knights to a runner-up showing in Class 4A.

Puerto Rico vs. Mexico in boxing

Next month in Las Vegas, Nev., Mexico's Antonio Margarito and Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto battle for welterweight supremacy.

There have been several big fights between Mexico and Puerto Rico in the history of sport.

Here are a few of my favorite matchups over the years:
Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Edwin Rosario
Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Hector Camacho
Salvador Sanchez vs. Wilfredo Gomez
Felix Trinidad vs. Yori Boy Campas
Wilfredo Gomez vs. Carlos Zarate
Wilfredo Gomez vs. Lupe Pintor

How about you the fans?

The Cotto/Margarito clash has the chance to be another great one because both fighters are talented, experienced and are capable of handing the other a defeat. Nothing would surprise me in this matchup.

Ruidoso Downs Notes

Kentucky Derby Runner In Thoroughbred Stakes Doubleheader

Going Wild, who raced in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, makes his New Mexico debut in the $50,000 Free Spirits Handicap and the best two-year-old prospects in the $110,000 Ruidoso Thoroughbred Sale Futurity adds up to an enticing stakes doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.
First post time is 1 p.m. and there is always free parking and free grandstand admission.
In the Free Spirits Handicap, R.D. Hubbard’s Going Wild makes his first New Mexico start after competing at 11 different tracks, including Santa Anita Park, Belmont Park and Churchill Downs.
Going Wild was on the Triple Crown trail in 2005 when he started his season with wins in the San Miguel Stakes and the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita. In the Sham Stakes he defeated eventual Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo. He concluded his sophomore campaign at the Southern California track with a second in the Santa Catalina Stakes.
The earner of nearly $370,000 was then shipped to Aqueduct and finished seventh in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at 5-2 odds. He made his final Kentucky Derby prep at Keeneland in the Lexington Stakes, fading to fifth after setting the pace.
Chief of Thestreet takes on older horses in the Free Spirits after racing to an upset win in the Norgor Derby. He came from well off the pace to win by a length at six furlongs while going off at nearly 15-1 odds.
In the Thoroughbred Sale Futurity, it will be a showdown between trial winners Dancing Kitten and Flomot. The top five finishers in each trial earned eligibility to the five-furlong Thoroughbred Sale Futurity.
The Weston Martin-trained Dancing Kitten showed potential in her trial when she rallied to the stretch and fought to a neck win while making her first career start.
Honkytonk Slim, the 11-10 choice in the trial, was a competitive second in that trial by gaining lead in the lane before giving way to Dancing Kitten.
The Todd Fincher-trained Flomot has the experience edge with two starts capped by his victory in the second trial. The gelding was third in his career debut and then stepped forward in his trial with a neck win. He was in a stalking position and then rallied to get the win in 1:00 1/5.
Nitro Bud, second to Flomot, could be dangerous at an attractive price in the Thoroughbred Sale Futurity. The Martin-trained gelding rallied in the final furlong to get within a neck of Flomot while making his first start.
Next weekend is the first Ruidoso Rendezvous and the Ruidoso Racehorse Hall of Fame inductions.
The Ruidoso Rendezvous brings together anybody who has a history at Ruidoso Downs. It runs on Friday through Sunday by the Horseshoe Bar in the upper level of the clubhouse. This is the place to meet your friends from years gone by at Ruidoso Downs.
This year’s Hall of Fame class is owner/breeder Dr. Ed Allred, trainer Sleepy Gilbreath, jockey Kenny Hart and champion Corona Chick. There are a limited number of tickets available for the induction dinner for $50 each. Call 505.378.4431 for information. Tickets are tax deductible.
The Fourth of July weekend will be a highlight of the 60-date summer season. On Thursday, July 3 are the Rainbow Futurity trials; on Friday, July 4 are Rainbow Derby trials; and on Saturday, July 5 Lonestar will be performing under the summer stars.
Coming up are the Rainbow Derby (July 19), Rainbow Futurity (July 20) and the Zia Festival (July 26-27). The best horses in the southwest will be competing and look for champion Heartswideopen in the Rainbow Derby trials and Peppers Pride possibly going for the all-time record for wins to start a career during the Zia Festival.

Joe Calzaghe

In April, unbeaten Joe Calzaghe beat Bernard Hopkins at 175-pounds. Before that, he was the 168-pound king, beating the likes of Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler.

Now, the 36-year-old wants to finish his career fighting American Roy Jones, an owner of world titles in four different weight classes.

But Jones hasn't been the same in recent years, suffering losses to Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver. Still, a Calzaghe/Jones fight is intriguing. It would be a battle of the two best fighters in their weight classes in the past two decades.

Right now, Calzaghe is at his best. He is a tough fighter with great skill. He had to come off the canvas to beat Hopkins and he might just be too much for Jones. Jones is still better than most fighters, but he has slowed down some and that might be a dangerous situation for him against Calzaghe.

Still, Jones and Calzaghe are two great fighters and it would be a good fight. But Calazghe could have fought middleweight king Kelly Pavlik or someone else from America. But it appears he wants to go out with a bang and for him it appears it can't get bigger than Jones.

Good showing by the South

The South had a strong showing this weekend in the 4A/5A North/South All-Star baseball series at Apodaca Park, winning the series 2-1.

The North came in with the likes of Nolan Snell, Cory Lamont, Ryan Reynolds and Anthony Haase on the mound, but gave up nine runs on Friday night in Game 1 and 13 in Game 2.

The South seemed to play with a little more energy and intensity this weekend and they were very good at the plate.

The South got solid showings this weekend from the Carlsbad duo of Daniel Martinez and Jonathan Rodriguez. Martinez hit the game-winning, 3-run homer on Friday night and Rodriguez, who is a future New Mexico State baseball player, wrecked havoc at the plate.
Also, Goddard's Chris Trujillo was solid on the mound in the Game 2 win, limiting the North two runs and striking out eight.
Goddard's Jeremy Kirk hit the ball well, as did Mayfield's Isaiah Dominguez and Deming's Mikey Haime.

I was most impressed with the North's Kyle Henke, who went to school at Piedra Vista. Henke hit the ball hard every time he was at bat. Farmington's players also did well, particularly Chris Coleman and Jon Mestas.

Overall, it was a good series and some of the state's best certainly played well at times in the 33rd Annual Series, which the North leads 18-15.

Austin Trout

It appears that Las Cruces junior middleweight prospect Austin Trout will get a big break next month.

The 14-0 Trout appears to have landed an ESPN2 fight on July 9 in Houston, Texas, perhaps against 9-0-2 Byron Tyson.

Trout has been patiently waiting for an opportunity like this. Trout is a strong fighter with good skill and speed. He's been fortunate enough to have landed some work with the likes of Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley in between fights and he's been able to use that has a valuable learning experience.

But Trout is mature enough and a good enough boxer to take his career to the next level. If Trout can look good and defeat Tyson, who knows what looms ahead. There are some good fighters at 154 and Trout is one of those fighters. Trout just hasn't gotten the recognition on the national level that some others have.

Don't be surprised if Trout makes a big leap onto the national scene in the next 12-18 months. When Trout is motivated and in good shape, he's every bit as good as some of the top 154-pound prospects.

Boxing Book

Title: The Fight of the Century
Author: Michael Arkush
Pages: 257

I just finished reading The Fight of the Century, a book written by Michael Arkush about the 1971 Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier book.

It was a great read. The book went in-depth into the return of Ali from his hiatus from the sport after refusing induction into the military. The book talked about the city of Atlanta and how that fight against Jerry Quarry unfolded.

The book also went in-depth into the fight between the two combants that people around the nation had an opinion of in one fashion or another.

The fight not only had an impact in the boxing world, but it also had an impact both politically and socially.

There was so much history involved in the Ali/Frazier first and this is one of the best books I've ever regarding the first fight. The buildup to Ali/Frazier I was out of this world. You had arguably the greatest sporting personality of the day and the greatest fighter of the day in Ali and you had a low-key, hard-nosed fighter in Frazier.

Arkush's book relives a different and sometimes troubled time in American society, but it is a book well-worth it. It brings back memories for those that lived through it and educates those who wanted to learn what really happened leading up to and on that March night.

Sunland Park racetrack change

Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino recently made a decision regarding their premiere race, the mile and 1/8th WinStar Derby.

Actually, the race won't be called the WinStar Derby anymore, rather the signature event will be called the Sunland Derby. And the purse will rise to $800,000 from $600,000 and has the potential to be worth $1 million.

An intriguing part of the new race and new purse is a bonus plan. A $200,000 bonus will be added to the winner who carries a previous Grade 1 victory. A Grade 1 stakes winner could take home a $600,000 paycheck by winning the 2009 Sunland Derby. A $100,000 bonus goes to the 3-year-old with any previous graded earnings. The winner's share would be a $500,000 windfall. The winner's share for the Sunland Derby will be an automatic $400,000 before any bonus' kick in.

The move by Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino is a good one. It's a change of pace and it could very well draw in several new prospects. The WinStar race was always competitive and had good horses, just not great ones. The new bonus could force a Nick Zito or Todd Pletcher to bring in a horse, one that could be headed to the Kentucky Derby or one of the Triple Crown races.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather retires

Floyd Mayweather Jr. called it quits Friday and said he is no longer fighting. The 31-year-old welterweight champ is widely regarded as the sport's best. He's 39-0 with 25 knockouts and his boxing skill is superb.

If Mayweather is serious about his retirement, it's sad to see him go. He is a great fighter and he's been fun to watch.

But it appeared that he was losing some of his love of the sport. He took on Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton last year and while those were interesting matchups to an extent they were not the most important matchups he could have taken. He should have fought a Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito or Shane Mosley.

If Mayweather does stay retired, then fights with Cotto and Margarito won't happen and that's too bad, because those fights would have generated a great deal of interest to the boxing public.

Mayweather was too have taken on De La Hoya in September, but now that fight appears to be off, which is ok. Mayweather/De La Hoya II would have been a snoozer.

Sadly, it appears Mayweather is gone from the sport and that's not good. He is the face of a sport that needs big fights and great fighters.
