Las Cruces High football

The high school football season gets going in a few weeks and the first game is at the end of August. Here's a quick look at Las Cruces High. The Bulldawgs reached last year's 5A semifinals, where they fell to Clovis.

The Bulldawgs should be loaded in 2008 and could very well be the No. 1 team in the state at the onset of the season.

Las Cruces High starts the season on Aug. 29 at home vs. El Dorado from El Paso. The Bulldawgs take on a decent non-district schedule, taking trips to La Cueva and Artesia and entertaining Manzano.

The Bulldawgs should be a powerhouse on offense. Quarterback Dante Caro and running back James Hall Jr. are fast and are capable of taking over a game. The offensive line should be good and Will Bruce adds depth in the backfield.

Las Cruces High should have learned a great deal from last year's 10-2 season. It played a good schedule, beating the likes of Artesia, Manzano and Eldorado and getting edged out by eventual state champion Mayfield and Clovis.

The Bulldawgs have a good coaching staff that knows how to get a team ready and the 2008 Bulldawgs have been building up to this season.

Where Las Cruces High will have to step up is on defense. The team struggled in its two playoff games and will have to better than it was in those two games. The Bulldawgs could get beaten deep on the long pass and Clovis sort of beat them up on the line in last year's semifinals.

If LCHS can clean up some things on defense, a state title in Class 5A is certainly within reach.

I would have to agree with you. The Dawgs have so much talent this year. It would be a Dawg gone shame if they didn't win it all this year.

Has the 3 time State champs Mayfield been forgotten already? With the speedster Jacob Ceniseros and work horse J.D Ordunez coming back the Trojans should be lead strongly to another district and maybe even state championship.

I'm sure Felix will come out with a Mayfield summary soon... They'll be fine I'm sure, but the seniors to be at 'Cruces beat up on everybody through 9th grade just like the Onate juniors to be did.

It will be interesting to see how all you people react when somebody else gets on a roll.

All good things have to come to an end...

Mayfield appears to be a little nervous when somebody else gets mentioned anywhere.

Have the loss of a stellar class and a bevy of coaches got the yellow and green a little edgy?

Paranoia can be awful.

Ceniseros and Ordunez are really good ball players. But their surrounding cast in no where as good as what Cruces has in terms of depth. Disrtict and State go to the Dawgs this year.

how many times are we going hear about the onate freshman they had better classes there and did nothing with them.

A lot of Onate's problems in the past with their freshman. Has been it's hard to keep those guys eligible. That should change this year with the arrival of their new head coach. Hopefully they'll keep it up after their freshman year.

Las Cruces will be good this year no doubt.
Look for the whole local pecking order to see some changes.

I think this will be the year that we see some real parity in the city.

Mayfield had a nice little run... but like La Cueva and others before them, there time is about up.
Look for them to be about as good as 'Cruces and Onate from now on.
Ask Montwood what they think of Mayfield....
not much I bet.

someone needs to looks into onates new freshmans coaches background and will they be surprised what comes up. He sure has a big ego for such a little guy.

so all of onates problems are because of there freshman coaches? If you do the math that leaves them with 3 years left and they still have not done much with them. The responsiblity of keeping the players eligible is the head coaches, after all it is his program is it not?

Now that's a twisting of words!!!
I didn't read where anyone said any of Onate's problems are because of the freshman coach.

He may cause some problems no doubt, but you can't blame him for anything yet.

Furthermore, I think the Knights this year will prove that they have worked through all their problems...
Last year they had the whole coaches thing, and the year before they self-reported an ineligible player who tried to hide his bad grades and they took full responsibility for both things.

The year before that they were semi-finalists, and this year they should be at about that same level, but we'll see how it all pans out.

'Cruces seems to be past their problems as well. 2 years ago when they hijacked the playoffs was an unfortunate incident.
They look like the odds-on favorite to win it this year.

Either way it sure looks like the city's football teams will all be top notch this year. The blue trophy will have to come through our fair city yet again.

Funny how someone can hide behind a computer and talk about a coach. You are true cowards and jealous that your not good enough to be in his position.

Sounds like someones feeling got hurt.

Mayfield has been in the state finals 7 yrs straight and 9 times since 1995...yes indeed nice little run, and you can bet the Trojans will be in the mix at the end of the season.

You'll have to get past 'Cruces first...

With less talent than you're used to having, and less coaches as well.

Post under the "Mayfield football" heading.
This one's supposed to be about Las Cruces.

Dude, correction regarding your response to the nice little run comment, you forgot to count last year so its been 10 final state appearances since 1995, and that stat alone shows it is the Dawgs that have to get past the Trojans.
Remember the Trojans who became state champs again in 06 and did it with a grand total of 4 returning starters, its not the coaches or players its commitment to tradition. This post is about LC football, but it wasnt that brought the Trojans into dicussion READ the earlier post......

You bring up this tradition which is great, but Mayfield has won with kids who should have been at Onate or Cruces. Nuff said

oh and honeycutt wasnt suppose to be at mayfield? Your argument does not hold water. The open enrollment allows a student to go anywhere he wants its the students choice. Look at lopez when he qb lchs he was suppose to go to onate, alot of these kids go to where they can play for a coach that they feel can make them win.

It will take some time, but eventually the Onate district's kids will go to Onate.
It's getting better, and with the near 5000 troops moving in, there will be more people in their district.

Those folks won't have this silly mentality of making the kids go to one school or the other because the parents, uncles, aunts, etc. went there regardless of the district they live in.

Plus Onate will be pretty good this year.

His argument does hold water. Camino wins city regularly, and then their studs go to Mayfield or 'Cruces, but it's getting better nowadays. Mayfield will move aside this year IMO.

No, Mayfield has not been forgotten allready by any means. The last 3 years, Mayfield had better skill and supporting cast type players. It does seem that Las Cruces High has that type of team this year. As long as they stay focused, and don't get many devastating injuries to key players, then anything less than the blue trophy will be a disappointment.

Let's put the colors aside until gameday. This is going to be an exciting year for high school football, we'll let the kids settle the arguments when the time comes. Let's just hope ALL 3 schools can shut up the texas football talk continue the domination of the Albuquerque schools!

Yeah, Cruces might actually win this year. I just don't hope it ends up like last year, where they tire out near the end.
