Onate was terrible on defense

Wow, what a disappointing start for Onate High School on the football field. The Knights lost 28-14 to Bel Air, giving up an incredible 464 yards on the ground. The Knights better wake up in a hurry or this year could get away quick. Bel Air is improved, but certainly not a top tier El Paso team. But give the Highlanders credit for what they were able to do.

Onate looked sluggish stopping the run and a critical fumble in the third quarter stopped a potential scoring drive and gave life to Bel Air.

The Knights have to find a way to get over the hump in 3-5A and after the first game showing, I don't know if the team has what it takes to get it done. Fortunately for OHS, Gadsden, Alamo and it appears Cruces High are all beatable. It looks like Mayfield's district to take.

One game a season does not make. Onate was missing a few guns.. but agree they need to get better. Las Cruces got beat by a much better team than Bel Air, Eldorado may be the best team in the El Paso area... and the Bulldawgs gave up an incredible 600 yards in offense to Eldorado.
Alamo played Clovis tough and Gadsden is... well Gadsden. It appears that Mayfield runs away with the district... Cruces, Onate and Alamo fight it out for second.
AT LEAST AFTER week one.... next week it could be a different picture.

eldorado is a good team they are ranked 3rd in el paso. onate plays a weak schedule so even if the win a few game dont get to excited about them. once again mayfield plays a brutal schedule. any thing can happen lets wait and see.

I thought Onate played badly as well, and the guys on this team that were in the game Friday will need to step it up.
The guys that weren't in the game Friday are the real reason they looked so bad though.
Daugherty at MLB is the catalyst for the whole defense. It's the MLB that makes the alignment calls, calls the defensive plays, etc.. He's also the most productive returner from last year on the D.
Add to that Jason Sandoval, the most productive offensive returner being out and you have a recipe for disaster.

No excuses, because the kids that did play didn't get it done, and need to step it up, but I wouldn't count out the Knights completely yet, for that matter, I wouldn't count out 'Cruces either.

None of it really matters until district.

i wish they would just get rid of McKee get this group of egos out of there and bring in ocampo from manzano in and make this school something to be proud of in the district.

Coach O'Campo is a great coach... more importantly he is an outstanding person. I know personally. I do disagree that you think Kelly McKee has a huge ego. I have worked with the man and know him personally as well. He is a good man. Onate needs to get better... I said that in my 1st post here... perhaps one need to only look in the mirror when talking about someones elses ego.

Im not talking about McKee im talking about the seniors Duh? Your right kelly is a nice man a very good man but it is time for a change. Do you keep a man because he is nice and a good person or do you win football games like a coach is suppose to do?

PRC i think you answered your own statement you said ocampo is a coach and a good person enough said hire him.

Ocampo is a good coach. The best guy for that job is Henry Carrillo. Plus you can't give a football job to an Alb. guy, basketball yes but not football.

Sorry anonymous DUH your post reads a little like you were talking McKee and coaches. Maybe it is the new phonics. LOL
Henry Carillo would be a good choice, another good person. Some other great names out there could be Jack Cisco or Jim Hite. Both have and are winners. It is all speculation...Onate gets healthy, has a winning season and makes the playoffs and Kelly will not be going anywhere

coach mckee is a great football coach. i played for him in the 80's at sherrard high in illinois. absolutely brilliant play caller. great feel for the game and made each player responsible for their role in the teams success.
