Racing seminar

Professional horse player Art Canales hosts a free racing seminar at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Saturday morning.

The informative session gets started at 10 a.m. in the Signature Showroom. Canales will concentrate his study on the 12-race live program from Sunland Park including the 9th running of the $100,000 Borderland Derby sponsored by Casa Ford.

Two $100 wagering vouchers will be given away. Free refreshments will be served.

The $100,000 Borderland Derby is Saturday’s featured 11th race. The 1 and 1/16 mile feature serves as a major prep race for the $800,000 Sunland Derby with a $1 million potential to be run on Sunday, March 29.

Doug O’Neill’s Santa Anita export Scorewithcater ranks as the 3-1 morning line favorite with jockey Alonso Quinonez. Mine That Bird is a $304,381 graded stakes winner from Canada. The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile finalist is listed as the 4-1 second choice.

New Mexico-bred sensation Lefty Who rates an 8-1 proposition. The Joel Marr trainee has won 5 of 6 races including the $125,000 Red Hedeman Mile last December.
Lefty Who is the richest horse in the 9-horse field with a $330,074 bankroll.

Post time Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday is 12:55 p.m.

More Baseball Previews

Earlier this week I provided a glimpse of the Mayfield High Trojans baseball team for the 2009 season.
I am including information on teams around the state. Here is a look at perennial contender Eldorado High School out of Albuququerque.
The Eagles went 21-10 a season ago and 10-2 in their district. The Eagles advanced to the 5A semifinals, losing to eventual champion La Cueva. Head coach Jim Johns usually has a good team on his hands and this year should be no different.
Eldorado returns three starters, catcher Orrin Sears, first baseman Ryan King and pitcher/outfielder Sam Wilson. Johns will lean on newcomers Kyle Davis (3B/P), Armin Day (SS), Bobby Blackstone (2B), Nick Schnedar (OF) and Patrick Roney (P).

Eldorado has won six state titles under John and finished second three others times.

Miguel Cotto fights this weekend

Welterweight Miguel Cotto returns to the ring on Saturday night in New York when he takes on Michael Jennings for the vacant World Boxing Organization title.

It's a big fight for the 28-year-old Cotto, who is coming off of his first career loss last summer vs. Antonio Margarito.

Cotto talked to several members of the media last week and he feels strong entering the fight against the relative unknown Jennings.

"I don't feel any extra pressure coming into this fight," Cotto said. "I'm just prepared to win. It was not difficult to get back into the gym, that last fight was a great fight one against Margarito. I'm hungry to win again. My career was going good before that loss. I want to get back to that elite level."

Cotto has had a solid career in the sport, beating the likes of Carlos Quintana, Zab Judah and Shane Mosley. Mosely just handed Margarito a loss last month.

Cotto was expected to fight Margarito in a rematch this summer, but that looks unlikely after Margarito was banned for a year last month by the California State Athletic Commission because his trainer was putting illegal hand wraps on his hands prior to the Mosley fight.

Assuming Cotto defeats Jennings, a rematch with Mosley could be in the works, but there was no commitment from Cotto or his promoter Bob Arum.

Cotto should beat Jennings on Saturday and this boxing fan would love to see Cotto/Mosley II. The first fight was entertaining and I believe there would be more interest now in that fight after Mosley handled Margarito so easily.

Prep Baseball Previews

With the high school baseball season fast approaching, I am putting together some team outlooks from around the state. Some coaches have responded already and we'll begin a look at the Mayfield today.
Last year, MHS went 20-9 and finished second in District 3-5A with a record of 9-3. The Trojans won their first round playoff series against Cibola, then fell to Rio Rancho in the quarterfinals.
The Trojans a lot of good players from last year's squad, including Nathan Enriquez, Freddy Young and Tony Soto, all key factors at the plate and in the field.
But MHS has been one of the state's top teams in recent years and hopes it can continue that in 2009.
Among the key returnees for the Trojans are senior pitcher/outfielder Michael Ormseth, outfielder/designated hitter Jordan Bernal, cathcer/DH Diego Rodriguez and pitcher/3B Javier Ybarra.
Among the key newcomers are shortstop/catcher Steven Avalos, pitcher/1B Andrew Anthony and OF James Enriquez.

Antonio Margarito situation

I have to agree with California's decision to suspend welterweight Antonio Margarito for one year after illegal wraps were discovered on his hands before a loss last month to Shane Mosley. The commission’s decision will likely be upheld in other states.

Even if Margarito didn't know the wraps were illegal, he is part of the problem and should know what is going.

I don't even believe he should be able to fight anywhere in the world until next year. What happened was a disgrace to the sport and will forever tarnish Margarito's career. He is a good fighter without help, but the decision by his trainer to do what he did is reprehensible.

Boxer Alfred Angulo

Boxing fans, if you get a chance, watch HBO's Boxing After Dark on Saturday, Feb. 14. There are three fights, but the one fighter I am going to look out for is Mexican junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo. He's 14-0 with 11 knockouts and is all action. He will face Cosme Rivera.

Angulo is a possible rising star in a good division. He will give everything he has and has a bright future.

Also on the card is lightweight champion Nate Campbell and former welterweight contender Kermit Cintron vs. Spain's Sergio Martinez, in what could be a great fight between two fighters who need this win.

Eastern New Mexico making waves

It's great to see Eastern New Mexico University making a commitment to recruiting in-state football talent. There are several players in the state that can make a contribution to the Division II school. At last count, ENMU signed nine New Mexico players and was also interested in Mayfield's Matt Flores at tight end.

Eastern New Mexico plays in a good conference, the Lone Star, and it has a fair football tradition.

There might not be a lot of Division I prospects in New Mexico, but there are enough players that can make it on the D-II level.

Mayfield's Matt Flores staying home, other notes

Looks like Mayfield High's Matt Flores will stay home and walk-on to the New Mexico State football squad.

He played tight end on the defensive line as a senior. The 6-foot-3 Flores visited Eastern New Mexico last weekend.

Also just of note, NMSU signee, James Hall Jr. finished with some very impressive numbers at Las Cruces High. His 76 touchdowns are the first all-time in school history and his 4,775 yards rushing were 2nd all time in state history.

New Mexico State football signees

Sorry for the late post anonymous, but I've been working on stuff all day.

But New Mexico State head coach DeWayne Walker is happy with his class of 22, which includes four grayshirts, yes grayshirts, which means those guys will join the team next January.

The defensive line and offensive line was a main focus for coach Walker’s first signing class as head coach. The Aggies signed four defensive linemen and four offensive linemen. Also signing with the team were five defensive backs, three wide receivers, three running backs, two quarterbacks and one tight end to round out the signing class.

One of the quarterbacks is JC transfer Jeff Fleming. The 6-foot-4 Fleming is expected to compete right away for the starting nod. True freshman Tanner Rust is also coming, but Walker is hopeful he doesn't lose him to the MLB draft this summer.

Walker is high on incoming freshman receiver David Quiroga and junior college receivers Marcus Allen and William Bullock and he said junior college defensive backs Lorenzo Caldwell and Jonta Green will get chances to play immediately.

One grayshirt will be California running back Reuben Thomas, who Walker said could play in the PAC-10. Some teams may have backed off because he does have to get some work done in the classroom.
