Austin Trout to face biggest test

Las Cruces junior middleweight Austin Trout has had two big fights fall by the wayside in 2009, but on March 14 in Torreon, Mexico, he looks like he will get his biggest challenge to date when he faces Marco Avendano of Venezuela. Avendano is 27-6-1 and battled tested, while Trout is 16-0.

Eldorado High School WR Ross Williams

It'll be interesting to see what Eldorado High School wide receiver Ross Williams does for his college football career. The talented receiver has received interest from smaller schools, but it'd be nice to see him get a chance for either NMSU or UNM as a walk-on. He makes plays and has tremendous upside.

Chase Holbrook and weekend all-star game

Saturday is a big day for former New Mexico State quarterback Chase Holbrook. His talents will be on display in the Texas vs. Nation All-Star football game at the Sun Bowl in El Paso.

He'll have to prove that his numbers weren't just a product of the Hal Mumme Air Raid system.

Holbrook will have to prove that he can produce big numbers in other systems and that he can handle the pressure of the next level.

He'll get looks because of his accuracy and size (6-5). I'm not sure he'll get drafted, but a good showing on Saturday afternoon will only help him get positive feedback from the NFL.

Bruce Dollar to Hobbs

Former Alamogordo head football coach Bruce Dollar has been hired at Hobbs. He beat out former Hatch coach Charles Gleghorn and former Lovington coach Speedy Faith among others for the job.

Dollar is a good choice, he rebuilt Alamogordo into a title contender and if he can get things going at Hobbs, watch out. Dollar's teams usually are fundamentally sound and everywhere he's been, he's been a winner. Hobbs has a history of success in football, but hasn't been near the top in recent years.

Jorge Arce/Vic Darchinyan

On Feb. 7, a potential fight of the year will take place at 115 pounds when Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 knockouts) takes on popular Mexican fighter Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 knockouts).

The two fighters are crowd-pleasing fighters and both have big wins in their career. Darchinyan is coming off a big win against Cristian Mijares. Arce has won titles at both 108 and 115 pounds.

This could be a very good fight, but I believe Darchinyan has too much power and too much youth and I can see him stopping Arce somewhere in the middle of the fight.

What are your thoughts?

Dante Caro makes a good choice

Las Cruces High's Dante Caro made the right choice when he decided to attend the University of New Mexico on a football scholarship beginning next fall.

Nothing against DeWayne Walker and New Mexico State, but the Lobos have better overall support, better facilities and it can be argued the Lobos are in a better overall conference, the Mountain West.

Lobos coach Mike Locksley visited Caro in LC and got him to visit and apparently new offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey was high on Caro.

Hey, Caro is a playmaker, he is tough as nails and he's worth giving a scholarship to because of his football instincts. He follows in the footsteps of Nathan Enriquez, Freddy Young, Tyson Ditmore and Chris Hernandez as Las Cruces area football players who have signed with the rival Lobos.

Ditmore and Hernandez have been contributors to the program, while the verdict is still out on Young and Enriquez, who redshirted last year.

Walker and NMSU have to prove something to statewide players and it takes time, we'll see if Walker can eventually draw the state's best to Aggie Memorial Stadium.

Caro to play for Lobos

Caro commits to University of New Mexico
By Felix Chavez
Sun-News reporter
LAS CRUCES — Las Cruces High senior Dante Caro has verbally committed to play football at the University of New Mexico beginning next fall.
Caro, who was the Bulldawgs’ starting quarterback in his junior and senior seasons, visited the UNM campus this past weekend.
The 6-foot, 175-pounder also visited New Mexico State on Jan. 16-18. He had a scholarship offer from the Aggies and new head coach DeWayne Walker.
“I really liked my visit to UNM, it had good facilities, a good school and I like the staff,” said Caro on Sunday night.
Caro ran for more than 1,000 yards and threw for more than 1,000 yards during his senior campaign, which was capped by a 26-21 win against Eldorado in the Class 5A state title game on Dec. 6 in Albuquerque.
Caro, who will sign a national letter of intent next month, said last week that he will likely play defensive back or at wide receiver in college.
The Lobos have a new coach in former Illinois assistant coach Mike Locksley, who was hired last month to replace Rocky Long.
Caro is the latest Las Cruces area high school player to sign with the Lobos. Mayfield’s Nathan Enriquez and Freddy Young signed with the school last February and former Bulldawg Tyson Ditmore recently played at UNM for four seasons.

James Hall Jr. update

Las Cruces High's James Hall Jr. has not made a decision as of yet on where to play college football as of yet.

He said Wednesday night that he has some thinking yet to do and is considering different options. One of those options is Air Force, which has offered a scholarship. He plans on making a visit to Colorado Springs next weekend.

Word is that NMSU wants him to grayshirt and join the team in the spring of 2010. Hall visited NMSU last weekend.

Boxer Di Pace update

It looks like Las Cruces bantamweight Sammy Di Pace (5-0) could fight sometime in February. He was last in action on Nov. 29 in Rio Rancho, beating Alvaro Muro in a four-round decision.

Joe Lee Dunn update

Former New Mexico State defensive coordinator Joe Lee Dunn said Wednesday night that he hopes to coach again in 2009, but nothing is definite. He is under contract until 2010.

He said he met with former coach Hal Mumme recently and he said Mumme is doing well and is also on the lookout for a new job.

Also, word is former linebackers coach Barris Grant might be headed for the Tampa Bay Bucs. He is a good friend of new coach Raheem Morris.

Rio Rancho's Troy Harris to visit NMSU

I talked with Rio Rancho High School's Troy Harris today. He is visiting the NMSU campus this weekend on an official visit. He played running back for the Rams, but could play in the offensive backfield or at free safety in college. He said he really liked the NMSU campus on his unofficial visit last summer.

He has offers from Eastern New Mexico and Adams State among others. He also has received some interest from smaller schools on the east coast.

Peppers Pride retires

After 19 straight wins, New Mexico's pride of the racetrack, Peppers Pride has retired. The 6-year-old Mare holds the American record for consecutive victories. The Joel Marr trained horse will be going to Kentucky and will be bred to the stallion Tiznow.

It would have been great for Peppers Pride to run for another year. She would have been productive and could have easily extended her win streak. Plus, her racing would have been a positive in a sport that lacks enough of them.

She was a great race horse and she answered all the challenges that were given to her. New Mexico has produced some really good horses, particularly in the past few years and Peppers Pride was certainly at the top of the list. She didn't always win by a large amount, but she always won because she was determined and simply loved to compete.

DeWayne Walker coaching staff

First year New Mexico State football coach DeWayne Walker has put together a strong staff for the 2009 year.

Former NFL coaches Keith Murphy and Dale Lindsey bring plenty of experience and knowledge. Jason Lenzmeier was a solid offensive lineman in college. Timm Rosenbach had plenty of success in college as a player and played in the NFL. And R. Todd Littlejohn has experience on good teams on the college level.

Walker seems to have put together a staff that has a varied range of experience and that should help in transitioning between the previous staff and the current one. Plus, having some good name coaches will certainly help in recruiting.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz

Potentially one of the best fights of 2009 takes place late next month in Houston when Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz battle in a lightweight battle.

Marquez is truly one of the sport's best, having beaten the likes of Joel Casamayor and Marco Antonio Barrera and battling Manny Pacquiao to a draw.

Marquez moved up to lightweight last September and beat Casamayor by knockout. Marquez is getting better with age and he's tough as nails. He's a smart boxer and he's finally getting the big fights he deserves.

Meanwhile, Diaz is one of the best lightweights around. He has beaten some of the division's best and his only loss was a close one to Nate Campbell.

Diaz wears his opponents down and he bounced back from his loss to Campbell with a strong win against Michael Katsidis.

Expect a grind it out affair between the two lower weight fighters, but Marquez's boxing ability should be enough to earn a close decision. What are your thoughts?

Abilene QB

The former New Mexico State coaching staff had offered Abilene (Texas) HS QB Stephen Warren back in the fall, but it doesn't appear now that the Aggies are interested according to a source. Stay tuned if anything happens.

New Aggie football recruit

I spoke with California high school football player David Quiroga today. The 6-foot 1 1/2, 205-pounder has verbally committed to New Mexico State and hopes to visit next weekend.

He could play on either side of the ball and he has followed new coach DeWayne Walker over the year. San Diego State, New Mexico and Nevada were also recruiting Quiroga.

Dante Caro and more offers?

Las Cruces High senior Dante Caro has reportedly been offered a fooball scholarship by Eastern New Mexico.

The quarterback led LCHS to a 5A state football title in December. He's already been offered by New Mexico State.

New Jockeys

For you horse racing fans, it's a must to get out to Sunland Park Racetrack because of the solid jockey colony, which is arguably the best in the track's great history.

There are the usual solid jockeys like Ken Tohill and Joe Martinez on the thoroughbred side and Esgar Ramirez, Freddie Martinez and GR Carter on the quarter horse side.

But new riders such as Israel Ocampo, Luis Contreras, Alejandro Medellin and Antonio Castanon are making waves. Medeillin is successfull in both quarter horse races and thoroughbreds.

Each of the new riders have their own attributes, but the key attribute that each have is that all of them have a knack for making key moves when the timing is right. The race for the riding title should be over the next three months. The new competition also makes for better races and could make for good odds.

If you like to see good jockeys perform head out to Sunland Park on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Post time for now is 12:15 p.m.

Antonio Margarito/Shane Mosley

I can't wait for the Antonio Margarito/Shane Mosley welterweight title bout on Jan. 24 in Los Angeles. Margarito is coming off a huge win against Miguel Cotto in July. Mosley is coming off a win against Ricardo Mayorga in Sept.

Mosley is always competitive and he'll give Margarito fits because of his chin, speed and big fight experience. There is a good chance that this will be Mosley last big fight and he'll be ready to go.

Margarito simply wears down fighters and I think he'll be able to do that against Mosley. Expect the fight to be tight early. But Margarito has power in both hands and he's usually better in the last half of fights.

Mosley wins some rounds early, but Margarito is too strong and wins by late KO to gain steam heading into summer rematch with Cotto, who fights in Feb. against Michael Jennings.
