Charles Gleghorn and Kirtland Central

After seven seasons, 60 wins and three state championships in Class 2A, Charles Gleghorn has decided to move up in class to 4A Kirtland Central, where he was named the head football coach last week.

Gleghorn helped bring respect to the Hatch Valley football program, which had long struggled. The Bears won three Class 2A state football titles and made the playoffs three other times.

Hatch Valley was fun to watch under Gleghorn, who brought the spread passing attack to the program.

The Bears scored a lot of points and threw for a lot of yards.

Gleghorn is a good coach and a genuine nice guy in the business. Now, he'll get a chance to do some good things in a different class of football.

Gleghorn has a good mind for the game, he deals well with people and he has the experience of winning a lot of games. Don't be surprised to see Gleghorn achieve a great deal in his next stop. There will be an adjustment period for both the team and Gleghorn, but he'll be fine down the road.

Kelly Pavlik win over Jermain Taylor

Kelly Pavlik proved he was no fluke Saturday, beating the highly regarded Jermain Taylor for the second time, this time at the catch weight of 166 pounds.

In the first meeting last year, Pavlik used his power to beat Taylor.

The second time around, he used his power, boxing skill and inside fighting ability to hand Taylor his second loss, while staying unbeaten.

Pavlik, who will move back down to middleweight for his next fight, continues to improve as a fighter and his marketability is growing all the time.

Pavlik continues to step up his when needed and he has plenty of big fights left, including one this summer in New York.

It's refreshing to see a fighter such as Pavlik who puts in the time in the gym, doesn't sidestep anyone and who is class all the way.

He didn't disparage Taylor before or after the fight and he respects the game and his opponents.

Hopefully, Pavlik will continue to fight the best and continue to engage in entertaining fights. He could fight John Duddy this summer and perhaps even Felix Trinidad. Stay tuned.

What are your thoughts on Pavlik?

Wladimir Klitschko and heavyweight bout

Wladimir Klitschko is ready for his Feb. 23 fight against Sultan Ibragimov and he will try and bring some clarity to the world of the heavyweight division.

Klitschko owns the IBF heavyweight title, while Ibragimov has the WBO title.

The 12-round bout is an interesting battle between the two heavyweight, who are both former Soviet Union fighters.

Klitschko is 49-3 with 44 knockouts and he is certainly one of the best heavyweights of our era and his talents have led him to two world titles. He's beaten the likes of Samuel Peter, Calvin Brock, Chris Byrd and Lamon Brewster.

Klitschko punches with great accuracy, has great balance and his amateur background has made a huge difference in his career.

"Wlad's punches are like missiles," said Klitschko trainer Emanuel Steward."He doesn't waste too much and he would have been a threat to any heavyweight in any era. The only way to gain recognition is be an unified champion and that's what he's aiming for. He's got a chance to do that."

Klitschko showed a lot of heart in his Sept. 24, 2005 win against Samuel Peter, getting up several times from knockouts to pull out a decision win.

"The unification fight is an important one, but delivering a great performance is better for the fans and for the sport."

Ibragimov is 22-0-1 with 17 knockouts in his career. The 32-year-old Ibragimov won the 2000 Olympic silver medal and is best known for his wins against Shannon Briggs and Evander Holyfield.

"Sultan will be the toughest fight to date for Wlad," Steward said. "He has good hand speed, good hand and eye coordination and he moves well. He makes big guys get out of their game plan.

Added Klitschko: "My opponent is very intelligent and I'm expecting him to get in and out and be aggressive. But I'm ready and won't underestimate his skills."

The Klitschko/Ibragimov is Feb. 23 in New York City.

Gary Bradley and head coaching job

It's time for Mayfield assistant coach Gary Bradley to get a head coaching job somewhere. The offensive coordinator at MHS has a good football mind and he's proven to be a coach that can adjust well to the talent he coaches.

Bradley has applied at Farmington High School, a 4A school in NW New Mexico.

The offensive numbers that Mayfield has put up over the last several years is impressive, but particularly in the past three years.
Mayfield quarterbacks David Bustillos and Matt Sandoval have been very good during Mayfield's three-peat as Class 5A champions and others like recievers Chris Hernandez, Freddy Young and Nathan Enriquez have been very good at what they do.

The Mayfield offense has been fun to watch in the last few years because of the different formations that it runs out of.

Michael Bradley got his chance to lead the Mayfield program, now it's Gary's turn,.

I don't know that much about the Farmington program, but if Gary were to get the job and he was given time to implement what he wants to do, Farmington could become a consistent winner.

Gary Bradley and Farmington

Mayfield High School assistant football coach Gary Bradley has applied for the vacant head coaching job in Farmington.

The Trojans lost an assistant coach, Jim Hite, last week. Hite took the job at Gadsden High School.

- Felix

Analysis of Jim Hite as new Gadsden coach

The Gadsden Panthers made a great hire last week when it inked Mayfield assistant coach Jim Hite to lead the program.

Hite has plenty of head coaching experience and has coached in New Mexico and Texas. He has great knowledge of the game and his leadership will be a key.

But Gadsden has proven to be a tough place to coach in recent years. Hite is the third coach since 2004 and the program has had a hard time finding consistency .

What the program needs is a coach who will be at the school for more than two years and it needs a program that has a lot of work ethic in the offseason as well as during the regular season.

There simply is no consistent pattern of winning or coaches staying for a long time in the Gadsden program.

What hurts the program as well is that it competes against the likes of Mayfield, Las Cruces High, Onate and Alamogordo every season. Mayfield and Las Cruces High are consistent state title contenders, Onate should be better in 2008 and Alamogordo was in the state title game in 2006.

Scheduling is another factor. The Panthers need to schedule some cupcakes to help the kids gain some confidence. It seems as though in recent years that Gadsden plays a tough non-district schedule and they pay for it come district time.

Hite will try his best and if he doesn't get broken down and he stays at Gadsden for a few years, maybe he'll achieve something at Gadsden that hasn't happened in years and that's a get the program into the playoffs.

James Hall Jr. and recruiting

It looks like Las Cruces High running back James Hall Jr. will have a busy offseason.
The senior-to-be will attend the Nike Combine March 8 in Dallas, the Nike Camp April 20 in Los Angeles and the Ohio State camp in June.

Hall, who helped lead the Bulldawgs to a 20-2 record in a spot in the Class 5A semifinals in 2007, has received interest from New Mexico State, the University of New Mexico, Arizona, Iowa, San Diego State, Army and Air Force.

Pavlik, Jermain Taylor Rematch

When Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik meet on Feb. 16 in Las Vegas, Nev., it will be a rematch of one of the most exciting fights of 2007.

The 32-0 Pavlik stunned many by knocking out the 27-0 Taylor in the seventh round. Taylor, who was a 2000 Olympian, nearly stopped Pavlik in the second round of that fight. But Pavlik turned the tables and stunned Taylor.

Pavlik is a workmanlike fighter, who carries with him a big punch and a never say die attitude. There were probably many who thought Pavlik wouldn't make it big. In fact while Taylor was appearing on big shows, Pavlik was slowly but surely making his way to the top.

Now he's the champ and Taylor is the one that has had to readdress his career.

"It's not important that there is a title at stake," said Taylor during a recent national teleconference. "I just wanted to fight him again. I know I can beat the guy. I don't believe that a lack of title takes away any interest in the fight. The question is can he do it again or was he just lucky."

Taylor said he has thought about the second round of their first fight a few times. He had Pavlik seriously hurt, but just couldn't put the finishing touches.

"I underestimated Kelly," Taylor admitted. "I'm not trying to prove anything, this about me and going in there and making him look like nothing. I was beating him last time and I wasn't even at my best. If I get him in trouble again, I'll finish him, I'll put more punches together. The last time I didn't do what I needed to do."

Taylor has changed trainers for this fight, leaving world class trainer Emanuel Steward for longtime amateur trainer and advisor Ozell Nelson.

"I'm not dissatisfied with Emanuel," Taylor said. "He taught me a lot and I still use things he taught me. Me and Ozell know each other well and we're confident heading into this fight."

Added Nelson: "For this fight we are doing a lot of gut checking work, a lot of work on the bags. I want to make sure this time around that he will be in good shape and able to take Kelly out in the late rounds. He'll have the stamina to finish him. Emanuel Steward is a great trainer. We looked at Jermain last time and he was looking great. We all took Kelly lightly. Now we know Kelly comes to fight and this time we won't leave any stones unturned."

Taylor sounded focused, confident and willing to engage Pavlik in any type of fight that transpires on Feb. 16.

Taylor probably needs this fight more than Pavlik. A loss would diminish Taylor's marketability as a fighter and one would have to wonder about the confidence of Taylor if he lost again.

I expect Taylor to be in better shape and to fight a smarter, more conservative fight against Pavlik. He needs to stay out of Pavlik's punching range because the actual rise in weight could help Pavlik.

There are reports that Taylor struggled with the weight prior to the first fight and if that is the case, the six pounds should help.

"If he wasn't a great champion, Jermain wouldn't have taken the fight," said Taylor promoter Lou DiBella. "Jermain knew people wanted to see the fight. He never runs away from the challenge."

The Pavlik/Taylor rematch will be fun, but I expect Taylor to rebound and win a close, but unanimous decision.
