Las Cruces High's James Hall Jr. has not made a decision as of yet on where to play college football as of yet.
He said Wednesday night that he has some thinking yet to do and is considering different options. One of those options is Air Force, which has offered a scholarship. He plans on making a visit to Colorado Springs next weekend.
Word is that NMSU wants him to grayshirt and join the team in the spring of 2010. Hall visited NMSU last weekend.

I hope Hall chooses Air Force. My brother is a graduate of the Naval Academy and any of the service academies will secure a better future for Hall as a person, not just an athlete. My brother has done well with his degree from the Naval Academy. NM State is not academically strong like it used to be and we have no football tradition at NM State. Hall would be wasting his time to stay in Las Cruces.
I really want Hall to attend NMSU but as a veteran, I fully understand the doors a service academy can do for a young man.
It's a tough call. Ask the Lord for guidance young man!
NMSU or Air Force you can't go wrong either way.
Anon 7:07 you are right on. He should absolutely go with Air Force. It will be 20 times better for his future. NMSU can't compare with Air Force! I know his parents work for NMSU and that's probably the only reason he's seriously considering NMSU, but it shouldn't even be a question.
I'm an Aggie fan, but it would just be terribly selfish to want him at NMSU.
I don't get LC natives, they are upset that the local kids aren't recruited. Yet when they are targeted, they come on to the blogs and encourage them to go elsewhere, what gives?
while I do agree that the AFA is a truly great school, it does have its draw backs. Students have a very narrow course selection and if Mr. Hall would like to persue a career other than engineering or the military his best option may be at an academic institution with a broad selection of academic offerings.
Why would they want him to grayshirt? Does that mean he'll sit out for a year and then practice and play or maybe red-shirt? He'll lose a whole year of not practicing and playing with the team for a year if he's gray shirted. Why don't they just red-shirt him. At least he can participate and get a full season of practicing with the team along with a full year of education. He's a real good football player. Maybe he's better off going somewhere else to play.
What does gray shirt mean?
What is the matter with NMSU?
Not only does Hall deserve a
scholarship but so do the other
young men in this city who are being "courted" by NMSU. They give
them hope, then they are given nothing but stress to make decisions. Either give them their
well deserved scholarships or tell them they aren't going to help them continue on playing a sport they have worked so hard on to make a name for themselves. Hall,
and the other local boys deserve a
chance to prove their abilities. They played hard and have shown their talent locally for LCHS and Mayfield alike. Why send them off to look elsewhere or make them grayshirt or have them walk-on ...

There is nothing wrong with grey-shirting. It would give Hall a year to mature a little, and get in the weight room. He will also be eligible to red-shirt in 2010-2011 season, so I think it would be a good idea to grey-shirt. NMSU only has 18 scholarships this year. NMSU can't make everyone happy. NMSU has to offer those 18 scholarships to players who are going to make an impact for us early. We all know Hall wasn't going to make a serious impact until later in his career.
this town is rediculous. i have been here for 5 years and all i hear is everyone saying is we dont recruit local players and aggies suck because they dont recruit the 5'6 150 pound QB from mayfield or the 5'8 200 pound linemen from LCHS and when they finally recruit the 2 players we have in this town that are marginal prospects at best. everyone tells them to go elsewhere? what is the deal with you people? come on las cruces lets support the university after all it is basically the only reason this town exists in the first place!!!!!! pull your heads out!!!!!!!!
Could it be that we have like six R.B.'s on the roster, and this is a rebuilding year. He can join the team in 2010 spring and come in with a leg up on 2010 recruits, plus knock out some basic courses along the way. Plus if he was to get injured somewhere along the way he could use his redshirt then.

The question should be "who gives?" and it ISN'T NMSU!
James Hall's scholarship offer to NMSU was pulled and he was asked to gray-shirt instead. It's the same old BS that Aggie football has pulled for years, and explains why it's been almost 50 years that NMSU has been good enough to get into a bowl game.
Walker pulling this stuff only reinforces the doubts that many (of the ticket-buying) Las Crucens have about Aggie football and NMSU athletics in general.
NMSU didn't pull their scholarship from James Hall. They have asked him to sign as a grey-shirt. THat means James Hall will be on scholarship starting next spring. He will be part of the 2010 class. NMSU only has 18 damn scholarships, and NMSU is loaded at WR. NMSU needs to spend this 18 scholarships on players who are going to make a impact for us now, and James Hall isn't going to be that player.
Back on January 22, Anonymous said... "NM State is not academically strong like it used to be" and that is completely untrue. I'm a scientist, work around the world on soil restoration and remediation projects, and NMSU is known world wide as an upper tier institution, who's students get jobs. UNM on the other hand is not known outside of New Mexico. Just check out the Job Fairs at either school and UNM's is empty while NMSU has corporations from across the globe looking for employees. Hall and Caro are not large enough or fast enough to play for a Boise State, or Utah, but they could play for NMSU and have some fun. At UNM they will go nowhere and get a second rate education. I think the Gray Shirt option at NMSU is a great offer for Hall, as he needs to grow into a man's body before he can play D 1 football, even for a WAC or MWC lower level program. Caro needs to do the same thing at NMSU if he can because he needs to ad about 30 pounds and get much faster even for NMSU. 30 Years ago while working on my Masters, I was the Strength and Conditioning Coach at UNM (thank God I got my Ph.D. from another school) and that would have been my recommendation for either player even back in the late 70's when players were smaller and slower. I'm a graduate of Las Cruces High and watched Dante and Hall play every game this year, they need to go to NMSU and Gray Shirt without exception.

You wonder why local athletes in the past few years have refused to play for NMSU. Offering a player a scholarship is a priveledge and a welcoming, when that is taken away from them to give to a texas athlete ho do u think it feels? Why would Hall even think about staying here after they pull this crap on him. James do yourself a favor and play for a real football team.College football isn't all about staying in front of your own crowd. Do whats best for you
Hey "IC", asking a kid to greyshirt is hardly recruiting. It's more like a slap in the face. He wouldn't be able to go to school full time (and as a 4.0 student in high school acedemics and a degree actually mean something to him) nor would he be able to workout with the team (ie be on the depth chart/scout team). I understand that it would be great for him to play in front of his home crowd one day, but Air Force is head and shoulders above anything NMSU could offer...
