Las Cruces/Mayfield Football

With Cibola losing to Clovis on Friday night in Clovis and with both Las Cruces High and Mayfield both winning, there is no doubt that Mayfield and Las Cruces should be the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state of New Mexico.

Las Cruces is 7-0 and has passed big-time tests at Eldorado, at home against Artesia and at Alamogordo in the District 3-5A opener. Mayfield has beaten Clovis, La Cueva and Manzano and its only hiccup came against a very good El Paso Montwood team.

Cibola had its one big road test at Clovis and failed. I still think the Cougars could be a force come playoff time because of its size and experience. Cibola had been mentioned among the top two in the state in Class 5A for much of the preseason and into the first seven weeks of the regular season. But a loss at a up and down Clovis team in a game that the Cougars had control of makes you wonder if the Cougars are good enough to compete with the Bulldawgs or Trojans.

The Trojans and Bulldawgs likley won't lose heading into their Nov. 9 mathcup that will decide the district champion and the likley No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the state playoffs.

I think Cibola will be in the final four come playoff time. Mayfield,Clovis,LC and Cibola are my picks. The loss against Clovis was not because Clovis is better in my opinion Cibola has a stronger team. It just came down to an intercepion and a big play. The coogs can definitaly have a hang with Mayfield and LC. They just cant make to many mistakes. I cant wait to playoff time so the Coogs can prove that they can win a state Title.
