Former Deming High School coach Ike Montoya earned a nice win at his new high school, the Artesia Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon in the Class 4A boys high school state tournament with a 73-70 win against Santa Fe Capital in overtime. Actually, Montoya has been in Artesia for three years.
On Wednesday, his squad rallied from seven points down in regulation to force overtime on a Devyn Garcia layin at the buzzer.
Then in overtime, the Bulldogs outshustled the Jaguars to advance to meet St. Pius in Thursday's semifinals.
Montoya's son, Derek Montoya, is one of the state's top players in Class 4A. Montoya scored 28 points in Wednesday's victory.
Ike Montoya coached Deming to a state title in 2005 and a runner-up showing in 2004.
