The Las Cruces High girls basketball program has come a long way under third-year head coach Matt Abney.
On Tuesday, the program took another step forward, qualifying for the semifinals for the first time in the high school girls basketball state tournament by beating Cibola 43-39.
The No. 5 Bulldawgs weren't as big or athletic as the No. 4 Cougars. But Andrea Aragon hit four big 3-pointers, Amy Fratzola had 16 points and forwards Devon Mulheron and Domonique Rivera scored just enough inside to help secure LCHS' 19th win of the year.
Las Cruces High battled hard on defense and on the boards and were able to cut down on turnovers in the second half to pull out the win.
The win earned LCHS a spot in Thursday's semifinals against No. 1 La Cueva, a 63-54 winner against Sandia on Tuesday afternoon,.
La Cueva is also a big team, but not as athletic as Cibola. The Bears beat the Bulldawgs 51-43 earlier this season in Las Cruces.
Win or lose, it's been a great year for the Bulldawgs. Las Cruces High will need to defend the post and cut down on turnovers against Las Cueva. If the Bulldawgs can do that, they have a chance to advance to Saturday's 5A final.
