Class 2A boys basketball doesn't get as much attention in Southern New Mexico because of the lack of teams and tradition.
But Mesilla Valley Christian High School is taking care of that. In 1A, the team was a Final Four participant in 2000 and 2001.
In recent years, the school has moved up to 2A and last year, the SonBlazers won the school's first state title and is the No. 1 seed in this year's tournament, which starts Wednesday at the Santa Ana Star Center.
The SonBlazers love to play fast with point guard Zach Adams leading the way and forward Jeremy Roman leading the team in the paint.
I believe Adams could start for many teams in this state on any level and Roman transferred from 5A quarterfinalist Mayfield.
The SonBlazers have a fair chance of repeating as 2A champs. They take on Capitan in Wednesday's quarterfinals and should they win, a matchup with a very good Mesa Vista team could happen on Friday morning.
Mesa Vista, which must get past a formidable Santa Rosa squad, beat MVCS earlier in the season by six. However, the SonBlazers didn't have Roman at the time and Roman adds another element to the game.
Mesilla Valley has good depth and good size. The SonBlazers must be consistent on offense and must continue to get big performances from Adams and Roman, but also have two or three others step up on offense.
Texico and Penasco are also threats in 2A. Remember, MVCS beat Penasco by just two points, 53-51, in last year's final.
