What a season it turned out to be for the Onate High School baseball squad. The Knights nearly won the 5A high school state baseball title on Friday night in Albuquerque, losing a 4-3 heartbreaker to La Cueva.
La Cueva has won 5 of the past 6 big-school state titles and Friday's game was one of its toughest to date. The Knights got great pitching from senior Ariel Perez and made some good defensive plays to stay in the game. The Knights led 3-2 entering the top of the seventh.
The Knights finished 22-9 and return several key players next year. They will have to find a starter to replace Perez and a quality reliever to replace the departed Matt Cannon.
But Onate should have a good offense once again and is the early favorite to win 3-5A and perhaps get back to the state finals.

The Knights are indeed very young. Should be pretty good for a couple of years looking ahead.
Abe Tarin, Joe Koerper, Aaron and Jason Sandoval, John Cachora, among others will all be back and hungry.
Great Job Knights!!!
