Thursday's (May 22) meeting between Onate and Rio Rancho in the Class 5A high school baseball tournament semis in Albuquerque should be entertaining.
Onate will likely throw its ace, Randy Montoya, against Rio Rancho's ace, Anthony Haase.
Both have big-game experience and if both are on, don't be surprised if the game is low-scoring.
Rio Rancho is a very good defensive ballclub and pitching is solid too. Onate is good on the bump and its offense is good once it gets rolling as witnessed by its come from behind 8-7 win on Wednesday against Carlsbad.
Rio Rancho and Onate squared off earlier this season in Las Cruces and the Rams won 10-9.
This semifinal will come down to defense and who gets the big hit. I believe the game will be 3-2 or 2-1 and whoever makes the first mistake will be in some trouble.
The other semifinal pits La Cueva vs. Eldorado. La Cueva was very impressive in routing Santa Fe High, while Eldorado got good pitching in limiting the Vikings to just two runs.
