Solid night for the South basketball teams

It was a very productive night for the South boys basketball teams in the annula New Mexico High School Coaches Association All-Star Games.
In the 1A/2A game, the South overcame a 23-point second half deficit to win 98-93. Former Mesilla Valley Christian standout Zach Adams had 13 points to aid in the win.

In the 4A/5A game, the South won 124-117 in overtime. Hobbs forward Juhreece Thompson scored 29 points, 10 of them in overtime to help in the win. Las Cruces High's Lucio Luttrell (eight points), Mayfield's Nate Abeyta (eight rebounds, huge 3-pointer late), Chaparral's Humberto Talamontes and Deming's Anthony Lopez all played key roles as did Alamogordo's Travis Geiger.

I was also impressed with Gallup's Alponso Hubbard, who scored 25 points for the North. Hubbard, as fans might remember, scored more than 40 points against Las Cruces High in a state tournament loss in March. He is headed to a junior college in Wyoming. He is a strong player with multiple skills.

Of note, the games were played at Eldorado High School in Albuqurque and it turned out great. The crowd was decent and the crowd got into both games, a nice site at the summer event. It felt like I was watching a good regular season night of hoops.
