Las Cruces High and Gallup's Alfonso Hubbard

Wednesday night's Las Cruces High/Gallup game was one of the best of the day at the high school state basketball tournament in Albuquerque.

The 5A quarterfinal was evenly matched and credit has to go to the Bulldawgs, who were down nine late in regulation, but rallied for the win. Post Charles Chavez scored 26 points in the second half, 22 in the fourth quarter and in overtime. Sophomore point guard Terrel de Rouen showed he'll be one of the best players in the state in the future with an eigh-assist performance. He handled the pressure well and found Chavez for a layup in overtime to put LCHS up for good.

Meanwhile, Gallup's Alfonso Hubbard is the real deal in New Mexico. He can score outside and inside, he's a good passer and can handle the rock. I don't know if he can play Divison I or not, but it might be worth a look. He averaged 28 points a game for the season and against LCHS had 41. He has a good knack for the game and can score in spurts.
